Dance Workshop with Arwyn Carpenter

The SPARC Youth Council is pleased to announce the first part of our FREE four part youth workshop series! Our youth workshop series is intended to aid in bringing high quality performing arts education to youth in rural / remote communities (digitally).

Our first workshop will serve as an introduction to dance and will be led by the fantastic Arwyn Carpenter!

About the workshop:

Arwyn Carpenter (they/them) leads a fun, dynamic, physical workshop that will set movement qualities and patterns to music.

Participants will explore fall, suspension, opposition, swing and rebound through guided exercises and improvisation. We will collaborate to put together some lyric choreography and get a chance to practice and share for each other.

About Arwyn:

Arwyn Carpenter (they/them) is a non-binary dancer, writer and educator, devoted to decolonized art making. Arwyn holds an MFA in Dance and Choreography from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and a BEd from U of T's OISE. They were honoured with an award for Excellence in Elementary Teaching from OISE and Arts Educator of the Year, 2017 by the Elementary Teachers of Toronto. Their devotion to social justice education through dance led to the co-creation of an evening length work with creative input from 350 students about residential schools. Their current work, Selkie, for Prince Edward County's Flight Festival of Contemporary Dance (of which they are a creative co-lead) features five dancers on paddle boards to live music by Canadian soprano Patricia O'Callaghan.

This workshop will take place on Saturday, March 12th from 10:00 am to roughly 11:45 am.
